The Orange County Historical Museum interprets the history of Orange County, North Carolina, founded in 1752. On April 18, 1865, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston surrendered 90,000 Confederate troops to Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman at Bennett Place, a farm at nearby Durham Station, then part of Orange County (now Durham County). Prior to surrender, Gen. Wade Hampton camped at the Alexander Dickson home in Hillsborough.
